Stay in this delightful cottage in the foothills of the Central Drakensberg. The Antbear Guest-House was originally built in the 1940's and restored by sculptor Bruce Attwood. his cottage a charming and romantic retreat for any visitor with it's thatch and wooden interiors. The name of this cottage comes from a previous "resident" who lived beneath the floorboards before restoration. This cottage is eccentrically refurbished with wood gathered in the surrounding valleys. Here you will find that comfort & hospitality are part of the whole experience. A truly unique stay where a revisit will be a must as the Antbear has the perfect recipe for relaxation. You will find that meals are part of the surprises that the Antbear has on offer with home cooking an essential part of the menu. Perched on a natural kind of platform the Antbear overlooks the Bushman's River with breathtaking panoramic views of the 'berg from Giants Castle to the Sentinel. There is also lots to do in the area. A guided horse trail through a game reserve, hiking in the Drakensberg mountains, viewing Bushman rock art and enjoying a gentle drive down the Midlands Meander are but a few of the available options. For those of you who like to just kick back and relax there are a number of shorter self guided trails starting at the guesthouse like the one to the waterfall. Of course you could just relax on a deck chair with a great book or in winter view snowcapped mountains while having dinner & wine beside a warm crackling fire in the lounge.
The Antbear Guest-House consists of two buildings. The main house accommodates our honeymoon suite , the kitchen, dining room and lounge. and the seperate cottage next to the house consists of 3 en-suite bedrooms and a romantic fantasy suite. The Guest-House accommodates a maximum of 10 persons. You have the choice of showers or baths. 2 of the bedroomms have their own fire places for those romantic log fires.
The enormous lounge has a large fireplace and couches for relaxing. Two of the bedrooms also have fireplaces Braai facilities are available and firewood is supplied. Of course there are braai grids available and potjies for potjiekos.
Meals are part of the real surprises that the Antbear has on offer, as home cooking is an essential part of the menu. We like to use our own home grown organic vegetables or produce from the local farmers as much as possible. Home baked bread is something of a specialty as are the daily fresh scones for breakfast. There are a number of short self guided trails starting from the guesthouse. They pass some perfect picnic spots on the farm like down at the waterfall or beneath the poplar trees at the dam. Picnic baskets can be arranged.
Swimming / canoeing in the farm dam or tubing down the Bushman's River is something for the water rats .
The dam offers opportunities for Bass fishing.
Guided horse trails though a nearby game reserve where you will get within meters of towering giraffes and zebras
The Midlands Meander starts just 13 km from the Antbear
A number of golf courses for those golf enthusiasts can be found in the area
Fly fishermen find themselves in paradise. There are a number of dams in the area which are stocked with trout but the real excitement is the brown trout found in the Bushman's river.
The area also offers something for the adventurous. White water rafting on the Tugela river, abseiling and foofie slides for grown ups Hiking in the Drakensberg. The nearest Drakensberg Resort "Giants Castle" is just 35Km away. The Antbear is perfectly situated in the Central Drakensberg to access most of the Drakensberg Resorts within an hour's drive.
Kamberg boasts some spectacular Bushman paintings also just 35Km away including some rewarding berg walks.
